|Abstract:||Human-leukocyte-antigens (HLA) were studied in 21 Chinese male patients with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP). 26 Chinese male patients with thyrotoxicosis but without periodic paralysis, and 238 unrelated normal Chinese subjects served as control groups. The patients with TPP, in addition to sharing the HLA antigens which were common to Chinese patients with Graves' Disease as a group, had other HLA antigens (A2BW22 and AW19B17) which were not present in the patients without TPP. These antigens were also not associated with the overall group of Chinese patients with thyrotoxicosis. The possibility exists that these HLA antigens may serve as genetic markers for the TPP and this would lend support to the hypothesis of a genetic basis for this condition.|
