Abstract: This thesis work focused on the formation of novel nanomaterials with magnetic properties. Some insights to the fabrication mechanisms of these metal oxides and sulfides are discussed. The growth and self-assembly of cobalt ferrites were manipulated with reverse micelles and alkanethiols from colloidal solutions. We have studied the factors that affect stoichiometry CoFe2O4 and demonstrated the formation of assembled arrays of magnetic ferrite dots upon evaporation. Other metal oxides and sulfides were synthesized by non-hydrolytic approaches. Tin oxides and its cobalt doped nanorods and nanoparticles were investigated. Spectroscopic, magnetic and optical studies provided a preliminary understanding of the doping in SnO2. We have also studied the structural stability and phase transformation of cubic and hexagonal phase CoO. Besides, a novel and simple approach has been developed to fabricate four different phases of nickel sulfides nanocrystals from an air-stable nickel thiobenzoate precursor in one-pot synthesis.
