Two strains of Listeria monocytogenes were isolated from placental tissues of two women who had spontaneous abortions. The isolates were identified by slide agglutination tests with specific antiserum against L monocytogenes type 4. Both cases reports are described. The significance of Listeria infection in stillbirth and recurrent abortions is discussed.
