Abstract: This thesis describes the design and development of a radio-translucent mechanical testing rig for spinal mechanical testing used in conjunction with a Shimadzu micro-CT scanner. Several tests were conducted to verify the feasibility of the rig design. Firstly, the rig was able to exert pure moment loading in the compression, flexion\extension and lateral bending of a goat lumbar spinal unit, and to an extent that was comparable to previously documented literature. Next, stepwise compression loading conducted in the rig was found to effectively approximate a continuous loading of the same specimen (single porcine vertebra) in an industrial grade mechanical tester. Finally, micro-CT scans of a porcine vertebra prior to, and during compression loading were successfully obtained. For the first time in bone material research, micro-CT images of isotropic resolution 32.80 x 10-6 m allowed the study of trabecular microarchitecture detail of a whole vertebra buckling under 12.1 % failure compression strain loading.
