dc.description.abstract68 proved bacterial and 100 proved cases of viral infections are studied from the point of view of diagnosis using white blood cell counts and other characteristics. It is concluded that a total white count and PMN percentage are of no use in predicting the type of infection. One should take note of the possibility of a bacterial infection when the absolute PMN is more than 10,000/mm3 and the Stab cell count more than 500/mm3. However, in such situations, the NBT should be taken into account. Other parameters such as absence or presence of toxic granules, Dohle bodies, vacuoles and bacteria in the PMN should also be looked for to assist in diagnosis and treatment. Finally, it should be remembered that the whole clinical situation should be taken into consideration, and that blood counts and their characteristcs are only an aid, as the kinetics of the PMN in response to infections are extremely complex.
