The role of the state in the economic development of various Asian nations is investigated. It is contended that previous research on postcolonial states has examined the following: the emergence of postcolonial or democratic states; the postcolonial state's characteristics; the state's economic growth; & democratization processes in postcolonial states. The topics covered in this issue are identified: alliances between the private sector, state officials, & foreign capital; the prevalence of clientelism; the spread of corruption; & the privatization of economic growth. Detailed introductions for the respective contributions are provided. J. W. Parker.
