dc.description.abstract | Patch antennas are very popular because of their low profile nature, light weight and low cost. However, a major problem of these antennas is the narrow bandwidth. The goal of the thesis is to improve the bandwidth of a dual array patch antenna operating at 14.8 GHz with emphasis on the percentage improvement in bandwidth for an EBG type antenna compared to a reference antenna. This is accomplished by etching EBG patterns on the feedline connecting the two patches. These patterns resemble conventional EBG structures in their behaviour and properties. Three different EBG patterns are introduced and it is shown that bandwidth improvement upto 45%, 48% and 53.4%, respectively, can be achieved by using them. The significance of the position of feedline on bandwidth improvement is also highlighted in the thesis. It is shown that for good improvement in bandwidth, feedline should be placed at an appropriate position, but closer to the lower edge of the patch. | |
