Abstract: This study encompasses a numerical and experimental investigation of some new approaches for thermal management of micro-electronic components. These include: geometrical optimization of the heat sink using tree-shaped micro-channel networks, use of phase change materials (PCMs) for intermittently operated electronic devices, and a study of heat transfer using nanofluids as potential candidate coolants. Following comparison with conventional straight and serpentine nets, optimization of tree-shaped nets was carried out to demonstrate their advantages in electronic cooling with respect to pressure drop and temperature distribution. Study of PCM heat transfer included: partitions in PCM cartridge, multiple PCMs, wavy wall enclosure, and PCM-based hybrid heat sinks. Investigation of nanofluids in tube flow showed limited enhancement of thermal performance for the sample fluids tested. This study contributes to a fundamental understanding of three potentially viable electronic cooling techniques.
