Abstract: Deltex (Dx) was first identified in Drosophila through its interaction with Notch (N). dx mutants are homozygous viable and display broader or delta veins defects in their adult wings. Dx is ubiquitously expressed at low levels in the fly embryo and no embryonic phenotypes have been reported in dx mutants. During my work, I have found that Dx is required for proper muscle morphogenesis in the fly embryo. The phenotypes observed in dx mutant embryos include unfused myoblasts and low level of defects in muscle number and shape. Similar muscle phenotypes were also observed upon overexpression of a dominant negative form of Dx in the mesoderm. I also found that Dx interacts with fly GIT (G-protein coupled receptor kinase interacting protein) using in vitro binding and genetic interaction assays. Mesodermal overexpression of Dx caused pupal lethality and this phenotype was partially suppressed by simultaneously expressing a uas-dgit transgene together with uas-dx.
