Abstract: The L10 ordered phase iron-platinum (FePt) with a large magnetic anisotropy of 7.0x10^7 erg/cm3 has received a great attention because of its potential application as perpendicular recording media with an ultra-high recording density. Ag top layers and intermediate layers with different thicknesses were deposited on the top of the FePt layers. The diffusion of Ag from additive layers promoted the phase transformation. At the same time the intergranular exchange coupling in the FePt films was reduced, which resulted in the increase of the coercivity.The transformation temperature of the ordered L10 phase was significantly reduced when the FePt film was deposited on the MgO substrate. With ultrathin Ag intermediate layers deposited between FePt layers, the topography of the films changed from a continuous maze-like structure to an isolated island structure. As a result, the out-of-plane coercivity of the FePt films increased to over 30 kOe.
