Abstract: In the 21st century, the school to work transition is likely to be more extended & fragmented for many young people, complicated by a number of inter-related changes. Economic globalization & the increased flexibility of labour markets has meant that the school to work transition has become both extended as young people either feel the need to get more education in order to make them more competitive in the labour market, or stay in school until job opportunities are more plentiful. The growth of education has led to work-study programmes that attempt to make study more relevant by incorporating a work internship element thereby facilitating the entry to work. The education expansion has also meant a longer period of studying where substantial portions of young people end up working in order to support themselves through this extended period. The paper attempts to make sense of these developments by examining three inter-related trends, the lengthening of the education process, earlier entry into the labor market via part-time work, & patterns of youth employment & unemployment. The paper address the relationships between early work, regular full-time work & non-work on youth development. The data for this paper are drawn from two National Youth Council surveys conducted in 2002 & 2005 & supplemented with focus group sessions & government statistics.
