Abstract: This study provided the fundamental framework for the explanation on the changes in engineering properties and microstructural characteristics of cement-treated Singapore marine clay (SMC) due to the addition of incineration fly ash (IFA). The effect of IFA on the properties of cement-treated SMC was first evaluated. As the specific factors causing the changes in microstructure were not clearly reflected by the changes in engineering properties, this research subsequently investigated the effect of various constituents in IFA on the properties of cement-treated SMC. The effect of the soluble salts and bases in IFA was found to be chemical, while the effect of the insoluble residues of IFA was found to be physical. Finally, it was found that the changes in the properties of cement-treated SMC due to the addition of IFA are due to the combined effects of the soluble salts and bases, and the insoluble residues of IFA.
