Abstract: In this thesis I discuss the entanglement properties of thermal equilibrium states of many-body systems, with focus on harmonic lattices and quantum fields. I show that entanglement exists on the macroscopic scale and can be detected using thermodynamic quantities such as energy and temperature. I establish the parameter regimes where entanglement is present, discuss their dependency on other system parameters and find that they are dominated by the Heisenberg uncertainty relations. In the case of the Bosonic gas, I link the entanglement to the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation in three dimensions. Moreover, I discuss the similarities between previous order concepts and entanglement as a new order concept. Finally, I establish an analogy between measurement-based quantum computing and the process of phase transition in the two-dimensional Ising model. Lastly, I speculate about the implications of my results and give future directions of research.
