Singapore English (SE) is discussed in a rebuttal to an earlier article by Duncan Forbes (see LLBA 27/3, 9307103). Differences & similarities between SE & Standard English are discussed & the vowel system of SE is explained. The current status of English usage in Singapore is reviewed, & it is concluded that the regional Singaporean accent found in SE is not unusual - similar accents are found in English-speaking areas worldwide. H. L. Stidger.
