Discussed is the language situation in Nigeria in general, & the national language policy in particular. The problems of focusing on one indigenous language over another in Nigeria are reviewed. The main problem of the language policy is seen in its implementation, especially in inadequate teacher preparation. The role of English as an international language & as a means of fostering national unity through a common language is examined. Conclusions & recommendations regarding future language policies in the country are made. J. Sihvola.
