Abstract: The feasibility and the efficiency of characterizing the mechanical properties of visco-elastic and visco-elastic-plastic materials and their thin films by using indentation techniques were studied both theoretically and experimentally. (Semi) analytical or empirical solutions were derived to the indentation of five systems, i.e., bulk visco-elastic materials, bulk visco-elastic-plastic materials, soft visco-elastic films on hard elastic substrates, soft visco-elastic-plastic films on hard elastic substrates, pre-stressed hard elastic films on soft visco-elastic substrates. An efficient reverse analysis procedure was proposed and it was shown that the reverse analysis procedure was efficient and the uniqueness of the reverse extraction can be checked. The indentation of a pre-stressed film overlying a soft visco-elastic substrate was investigated to study the nanoindentation of cells. It was shown that the cell membrane cannot be neglected in interpreting the indentation data when the size of the indenter was comparable with a well defined length scale.
