dc.description.abstract | The position of English in Mauritius is discussed - the country's dominant language is a French-based creole, but its governmental & scholarly institutions use English. The history & governmental policies behind the use of English are reviewed, & it is noted that English is not the mother tongue of any group in Mauritius. The influence of economic forces in the country on educational matters, the functions of English in Mauritanian literature, media, & society, & the role of English in the education system are outlined. Analyzed are English instruction in primary schools, oral language activities in the classroom, English in textbooks, & the characteristics of examinations of English competency. Language teaching in Mauritius has been traditionally structuralist, but recent changes in learning materials & methods have helped to place English in a meaningful setting where it can have a functional role in society. The importance of education & literacy for the Mauritanian community is stressed. | |
