Abstract: We study the thermal radiation between two charged plates separated at a distance in the near-field regime. The plates are considered to be boundaries of two semi-infinite solids sandwiching a vacuum gap in the middle. Maxwell's equations are solved for layered media, with surface currents as inhomogeneity. Under the framework of Rytov's fluctuational electrodynamics, surface current is modelled as random thermal source, whose autocorrelation is obtained from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. By splitting the surface current into a random part and another deterministic response satisfying Ohm's law, Fresnel law becomes conductivity-dependent. Detailed calculations of Poynting vector in the gap are provided and discussed in the context of mesoscopic thermal transport.
