Abstract: In this paper, we develop a fractal-JPEG approximation model by incorporating fractal transform and JPEG. With this model, a hybrid fractal-JPEG coding scheme is constructed. An iteration algorithm is also presented to segment each frequency component into two different parts: one for JPEG coding and the other for fractal approximation. Using this algorithm, an image block is able to be encoded in the most effective way. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is better than both JPEG and traditional quadtree partition based fractal coder, especially in high compression ratio applications.
