Abstract: THE DISCOVERY OF GRAPHENE BY GEIM AND NOVOSELOV IN 2004 SPEARHEADED A WAVE OF INTEREST IN NOVEL TWO-DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS. THESE MATERIALS, BY VIRTUE OF THEIR DIMENSIONAL CONSTRAINT, EXHIBIT UNIQUE PROPERTIES, SUCH AS HIGH ELECTRON MOBILITY, HIGH PHYSICAL STRENGTH AND VARIOUS EXTRAORDINARY ELECTRONIC AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES. HIGH RESOLUTION ELECTRON ENERGY LOSS SPECTROSCOPY (HREELS), A SURFACE SCIENCE TECHNIQUE THAT ENABLES THE MEASUREMENT OF LOW ENERGY VIBRATIONAL AND ELECTRONIC MODES OF SURFACES, IS A VERY USEFUL TOOL IN THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SUCH TWO-DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS, DUE TO ITS HIGH SURFACE SENSITIVITY. IN THIS THESIS, HREELS, IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER SURFACE SCIENCE TECHNIQUES, IS USED TO CHARACTERIZE THREE OF SUCH TWO-DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS, NAMELY GRAPHENE, BORON NITRIDE AND MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE, REVEALING MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHANGES IN THEIR PHYSICAL STRUCTURES AND ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES.
