Abstract: The need to accommodate renewable sources of energy into our grid is urgent in light of the recent confirmation of human-induced climate change. Energy storage, in the form of grid storage batteries, will be critical to handle the inherent intermittency of these renewable sources. Widespread implementation of grid storage batteries is currently obstructed by lack of a cost-effective battery based on earth-abundant elements. Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), relying on globally abundant sodium resources, could be the solution. The research described in this thesis aims to develop a viable anode material for grid storage NIBs as promising cathode materials already exist. Two sodium titanate phases, Na<sub>2</sub>Ti<sub>6</sub>O<sub>13</sub> and Na<sub>2</sub>Ti<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7</sub>, have been demonstrated to hold a lot of promise in this regard. Their sodium storage properties will be discussed along with general discussions about sodium batteries. The results contained herein will provide interested researchers many useful indications towards developing future grid storage NIBs.
