Abstract: During normal development of the visual cortex and of its thalamic relay the lateral geniculate nucleus, in primates including man, there is a rapid increase in many morphological features in the perinatal period, followed by regression. This overdevelopment involves total volume, length and spininess of dendrites and synaptic number. The period of these phenomena corresponds closely to that in which functional features, such as visual acuity, are emerging and in which visual deprivation can cause amblyopia.
