Abstract: THE FLOW FIELD OF VORTEX RINGS IMPACTING A STRONG DENSITY INTERFACE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED USING FLOW VISUALIZATION AND PARTICLE IMAGE VELOCIMETRY (PIV) TECHNIQUES. VORTEX RING PARAMETERS AND INTERFACE DEFORMATIONS WERE MEASURED TO PERFORM A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE INTERACTION. THE EVOLUTION OF THE THREE VORTEX RING PARAMETERS (CIRCULATION, PROPAGATION VELOCITY AND DIAMETER) ARE FOUND TO BE SURPRISINGLY INDEPENDENT OF THE REYNOLDS NUMBER TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. BESIDES, RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT SHOW THAT THE NON-DIMENSIONAL BOUSSINESQ COEFFICIENT (I.E. RATIO OF ATWOOD NUMBER TO THE FROUDE NUMBER RELATED TO THE ROTATIONAL MOTION OF VORTEX RINGS) GIVES A FAIR IDEA OF THE INTERACTION. YET, THIS NUMBER IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO GOVERN THE OVERALL PROBLEM, ANOTHER FROUDE NUMBER RELATED TO THE TRANSLATIONAL MOTION OF VORTEX RINGS IS FOUND TO BE ESSENTIAL TO CHARACTERIZE THIS INTERACTION.
