Abstract: THE DWINDLING FOSSIL FUEL RESERVES HAS LED TO RISING DEMANDS FOR BIOPRODUCTION OF CHEMICALS USING RENEWABLE FEEDSTOCK SUCH AS XYLAN OR OTHER LIGNOCELLULOSIC MASS. THIS STUDY REPORTS THE ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A CLOSTRIDIUM SPECIES STRAIN BX3 POSSESSING UNIQUE CAPABILITY OF CONVERTING XYLAN DIRECTLY INTO VALUABLE PRODUCTS SUCH AS BUTYRIC ACID AND REDUCING SUGARS. FERMENTATION PARAMETERS (E.G., PH, XYLAN CONCENTRATION, YEAST EXTRACT AND INOCULUM SIZE) WERE TESTED AND OPTIMIZED, RESULTING IN 3.0 G/L BUTYRIC ACID PRODUCTION FROM XYLAN. MASS SPECTROMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE BACTERIAL SECRETOME FURTHER REVEALED THE PRESENCE OF SEVERAL ENZYMES RELATED TO PENTOSE UTILIZATION AND BUTYRATE FORMATION, THEREBY CORROBORATING THE RESULTS. ADDITIONALLY, A COCULTURE CONSISTING A SOLVENTOGENIC CLOSTRIDIUM SP. STRAIN S2 AND STRAIN BX3 WAS ABLE TO PRODUCE 0.78 G/L BUTANOL FROM XYLAN DIRECTLY. RESULTS FROM THIS STUDY PROVIDE FOUNDATION IN UTILIZING COMPLEX SUBSTRATES LIKE XYLAN TO PRODUCE BUTYRIC
