Abstract: The thesis examines the relationship between urban civil society actors and information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the software capital of India, Bangalore. It moves away from a study of activism and protests to focus on the use of ICTs for civic and political engagement. Employing a qualitative research framework, the thesis examines two case studies in-depth: environmental network, Hasiru Usiru, and blog-based platform, Praja.in. It highlights the social innovations currently underway in Bangalore, as well as the problems that limit creative and strategic Internet use by civil society organisations in the `IT City?. Finally, the thesis identifies the emergence of a ?new civil society? in India, which is distinguished from conventional or ?developmental civil society?, by virtue of its emphasis on information- and technology-based solutions to civic and political issues. In doing so, the thesis sheds light on the changing landscape of civil society in India, and the significant role of ICTs in this evolution.
