dc.description.abstract | As sessile organisms, plants have evolved multiple mechanisms to respond to environmental changes to improve survival. Arabidopsis plants show accelerated flowering at increased temperatures. Here, I show that Jumonji-C domain-containing proteins, JMJ30 and JMJ32, positively regulate the expression of the flowering-repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) by removing the repressive histone modification H3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) from the locus. At elevated temperatures, the stabilized JMJ30 proteins maintain a transcriptionally-permissive chromatin state at the FLC locus, and hence a high level of FLC expression, to prevent extreme precocious flowering. I also uncover JMJ30/JMJ32?s role in the vernalization pathway to antagonize the PRC2-mediated FLC repression. Plants which lose the H3K27me3 demethylases jmj30 jmj32 are more sensitized for vernalization, requiring a shorter period of cold treatment to acquire the vernalized state. Taken together, JMJ30/JMJ32-mediated histone demethylation and PRC2-mediated H3K27me3 deposition at the FLC locus constitute a dynamic balancing mechanism to finetune floral transition. | |
