Abstract: CHRONIC DISEASES HAVE BEEN RECOGNISED AS A MAJOR HEALTH ISSUE, AND THEIR CHRONIC NATURE ALONG WITH THEIR COMPLICATIONS RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC BURDEN. IN SINGAPORE, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE COSTS OR ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF CHRONIC CONDITIONS. IN THIS THESIS STUDY, THE COSTS OF THREE COMMON CHRONIC CONDITIONS WERE ESTIMATED: (I) DIABETES MELLITUS, (II) STROKES AND (III) OSTEOPOROTIC FRACTURES. DIRECT MEDICAL COST WAS ESTIMATED FOR ALL THREE CONDITIONS, WHILE INDIRECT COST WAS ALSO MEASURED FOR OSTEOPOROTIC FRACTURES. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE COSTS OF THESE DISEASES ARE HIGH, WITH INPATIENT COST BEING THE MAJOR COST DRIVER OF THE TOTAL ESTIMATED EXPENDITURE. THE STUDY FINDINGS PROVIDE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE COSTS OF THESE CHRONIC DISEASES IN THE LOCAL POPULATION, WHICH CAN BE USEFUL FOR POLICYMAKERS, GOVERNMENT AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS TO TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO ESTABLISH HEALTHCARE PRIORITIES AND IMPROVE DISEASE MANAGEMENT.
