Abstract: THIS THESIS FOCUSES ON THE N-HETEROCYCLIC CARBENE CHEMISTRY OF PALLADIUM, GOLD AND COPPER. THE FIRST PART OF THIS WORK DISCUSSES THE SYNTHESES AND CATALYTIC APPLICATIONS OF A SERIES OF DIPALLADIUM(II) COMPLEXES INCORPORATING A TRIAZOLE-DERIVED ?JANUS?-TYPE DICARBENE BRIDGE. THE FOLLOWING CHAPTER (CHAPTER 3) FIRST REPORTS ON A COMPLETE SERIES OF GOLD 1,3-DIISOPROPYL-BENZIMIDAZOLIN-2-YLIDENE (IPR2-BIMY) COMPLEXES WITH VARYING METAL OXIDATION STATES, HALIDO MOIETIES, AND NUMBER OF CARBENE LIGANDS. THE ELECTRONICAL PROPERTIES OF ALL AU CARBENE COMPLEXES HAVE BEEN THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED BY ELECTRONIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY AND CYCLIC VOLTAMMETRY. THE SECOND PART OF CHAPTER 3 DESCRIBES A GOLD(I) HETERO-BIS(NHC) SYSTEM, WHICH BEARS A FIXED IPR2-BIMY LIGAND AND AN ADDITIONAL NHC LIGAND. THE CONSTANT IPR2-BIMY LIGAND PROVED TO BE A USEFUL SPECTROSCOPIC PROBE TO DETERMINE THE DONATING ABILITIES OF TRANS-STANDING CARBENE LIGANDS.
