Abstract: Origamic architecture (OA) is an art form that involves cutting and folding a single piece of paper to resemble three-dimensional objects. While similar to pop-up books, OA is created with no gluing, which puts complex constraints to the design. In this thesis, we present an algorithm for automatic design of OAs that closely depict input 3D models. Our algorithm is grounded on a set of geometric conditions to ensure the stability and foldability of the pop-ups. Moreover, our method uses an image-domain approach that allows capturing important shapes. Our algorithm is significantly better than the existing methods in the preservation of contours, surfaces and volume. In addition, we propose a simple yet effective approach for analyzing the physical strength of OA structures. It allows detecting and correcting physically weak pop-ups in real time. By combining both aspects, we guarantee that our OA designs are both geometrically valid and physically strong.
