Abstract: THIS THESIS CONCERNS THE STUDY OF POLYHEDRAL OLIGOMERIC SILSESQUIOXANES (POSS) BASED HYBRID MATERIALS AND THEIR POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS. THE EFFECT OF POSS ON THE OPTICAL, ELECTRONIC AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FOUR MODEL SYSTEMS WAS DESIGNED AND EXAMINED. THESE INCLUDED (I) POSS WAS FOUND TO SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE THE THERMAL STABILITY OF AZOBENZENE DYES WITHOUT AFFECTING THEIR PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES. (II) ISOLATION OF OLIGOFLUORENES WITH BIFUNCTIONAL POSS IN A SERIES OF ALTERNATING POLY(OLIGOFLUORENES) PRODUCED HYBRIDS THAT EXHIBITED THE PURE EMISSION OF OLIGOFLUORENES WHILE HAVING THE FLEXIBILITY OF POLYMERS. (III) FURTHER INCORPORATION OF BENZOTHIADIAZOLE INTO (II) FORMED A DONOR-POSS-ACCEPTOR TYPE HYBRID. FOSTER RESONANCE ENERGY TRANSFER (FRET) WAS INVESTIGATED AND INTRA-CHAIN ENERGY MIGRATION WAS FOUND POSSIBLE ACROSS THE POSS CAGE. (IV) THERMOPLASTIC EPOXY RESINS WERE ADDED WITH POSS AS NANOFILLERS TO GIVE ENHANCED TOUGHNESS AND STRENGTH. THESE STUDIES PROVIDE VALUABLE INSIGHTS
