Abstract: China has embarked on a national effort to build up a positive image of itself on the international stage. This paper focuses on some of the key media initiatives that China has undertaken to proactively shape how others view it. The author argues that these media initiatives are best understood within the context of China trying to lay the foundations of its soft power. This, however, will require much time and effort to carry out, and the challenges are numerous. China is fully aware that given the vagaries of the international environment, there will be ebbs and flows in how others view China. However, China is determined to be involved to actively shape this process.
