Abstract: The x-ray diffraction (XRD) study of unpoled PZN-(6-7)%PbTiO 3(PT) plate and powder samples was presented. The focus was on the effect of particle size and trapped metastable phases on the full-width-at-half maximum (FWHM) of rhombohedral peaks of the material. The sharpest peak, which had a FWHM of 0.10°-0.12° was obtained from powder samples of intermediate particle sizes of about 120 μm. The results suggest that the untrapped monoclinic phase could have provided a more effective means of stress relaxation in PZN-7%PT leading to a more gradual increase in the FWHM of the peak of this composition.
