Abstract: Three different personalized exhaust (PE) devices were simulated, evaluated and compared numerically using computational fluid dynamics method: a chair-PE, which is at the upper part of a chair, just behind the human head; a top-PE, which is a round device above the human head; a shoulder-PE, which are two local exhaust devices installed at the chair, just above the shoulder level. Two different kinds of personalized ventilation air terminal devices were simulated: Desktop Device (DTV) and Vertical Desk Grill (VDG). The results suggest that all the three PE devices may be able to control the transmission of exhaled air between occupants. The lowest inhaled fraction was achieved by combination of VDG and a top-PE. However, only the shoulder-PE device has the potential to improve the amount of personalized ventilation air in inhaled air.
