dc.description.abstract | Subwavelength grating is important in modern optics and photonics, widely being used as polarizer, wave plate and so on. The recent decades have witnessed the surge of research interest in terahertz waves and GaN LEDs. THz wave has unique properties and is used in areas like security screening and medical imaging. Due to the lack of materials that naturally response to THz waves, subwavelength grating based devices are excellent candidatures for THz polarizer and modulator. Subwavelength grating can also enable functional light sources like polarized LED, broadening the applicability of LEDs. In this thesis, the application of subwavelength grating for polarization control in THz and visible frequency ranges is experimentally demonstrated. An extremely high performance THz polarizer based on bilayer subwavelength metal grating is shown. Next, the optically tunable THz plasmonic response of InSb subwavelength grating is elaborated. Finally, a polarized GaN LED integrated with Al subwavelength grating is demonstrated. | |
