Abstract: A broadband T-probe proximity-fed short-circuited quarter-wavelength rectangular patch antenna is proposed as one possible candidate for mobile communication applications. Using a foam layer of thickness ∼0.09λ0 as a supported substrate, an impedance bandwidth of 59% and a gain of over 4.5 dBi have been obtained. The far-field patterns are stable across the passband. Experimental and computed results based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method are provided. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
