|Abstract:||In the normal monkey, numerous NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) positive neurons and nerve fibres were localized in the pancreatic ganglia. In each ganglia, 99% of the neurons were stained for NADPHd activity. Each neuron showed intense labelling in the cell cytoplasm and processes but not in the nucleus. At 7 days after bilateral vagotomy, NADPH-d positive neurons appeared normal. At 14 days, NADPH-d positive ganglia were commonly encountered. About 60 percent of the neurons in the ganglia were NADPH-d positive. Some degenerated labelled debris were localized in close proximity to the neurons. At 3 months, distorted spiny-looking neurons were present in the NADPH-d positive ganglia. However, only 40 percent of the neurons were NADPH-d positive. Most of the labelled neurons were irregular in shape and their nuclei were not easily distinguishable. Many of the neurons appeared to be devoid of processes and were stunted. At 12 months, most of the neurons remaining were NADPH-d positive and were located at the periphery of each ganglion, with a central core area that was empty-looking. In certain ganglia, only 2-3 neurons were heavily stained while the majority were moderately to lightly stained. It is hereby concluded that bilateral vagotomy has a long lasting effect on the NADPH-d positive neurons in the monkey pancreatic ganglia.|
