Abstract: Nowadays, leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA) are more frequently used in the maintenance treatment of asthma. The present text gives an overview of present knowledge of LTRA, focused on asthma in children. At the moment, the major conclusions are that LTRA are more effective than placebo in the treatment of asthma in children between the ages 2 and 14 year, but that more comparative studies, especially with inhaled corticosteroids, are needed before it will be possible to positionate LTRA more appropriately in the maintenance treatment of childhood asthma.
