Abstract: THIS STUDY EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITY EXPERIENCE AND CITY WRITING IN TANG POETRY. CITY CULTURE WAS HIGHLY DEVELOPED IN THE TANG DYNASTY (618-907), ESPECIALLY IN ITS CAPITAL, CHANG?AN (PRESENT XI?AN, SHAANXI). CITYSCAPE IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM NATURAL LANDSCAPE, THE PASTURES OR FRONTIER FORTRESSES, WHICH MEANS THAT IT WOULD HAVE LED TO A DIFFERENT STYLE OF POETRY AS A RESULT. THIS ESSAY DISCUSSES CITY EXPERIENCE OF THE LITERATI AND THEIR POEMS COMPOSED ABOUT CHANG?AN. TANG POETRY IS AN EPITOME OF MATERIAL AND CULTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF TANG DYNASTY, CONTAINING A LARGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION IN THIS REGARD. CHANG?AN, BEING THE CAPITAL OF THE TANG EMPIRE, IS ALSO THE CITY WHICH BEST REPRESENTS AND REFLECTS DEVELOPMENTS OF THE DYNASTY. THIS STUDY DOCUMENTS ASPECTS OF THE WRITINGS OF THE LITERATI ON THEIR CITY EXPERIENCE IN CHANG?AN DURING THIS TIME.
