Abstract: The freshwater crab family Potamidae is classified into two subfamilies based on differences in the structure of the eighth thoracic sternite; one, the Potaminae, which is distributed in Europe, North Africa, Socotra island (Yemen), the Near East, Middle East, northern India and Myanmar, and the other, the Potamiscinae, which occurs in East and Southeast Asia. Their distributions are quite distinct, overlapping only in northeastern India and Myanmar. The genus Potamon s. str. is, therefore, clearly absent from the fauna of East Asia.
